Considering laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a service offered as a way to reduce unwanted body hair. Most common areas for treatment include: underarm hair, bikini and buttock area, arms, legs, abdomen and facial hair. At Swetnam Cosmetic, our goal is to reduce the hair by 80-90 percent. Any remaining hair is typically lighter and much thinner. Body hair takes roughly six to nine treatments while facial hair takes about nine to 12 treatments. The treatments are typically scheduled four to six weeks apart.
Dr. Jeffrey Swetnam encourages his patients to undergo laser hair removal during the winter months, so that patients are summer-ready by the time warm weather rolls around. Although, treatments are available throughout the year.
Patients with dark, thick hair often see the best results while those with white, very blonde or light red hair often respond poorly. Treatments are done in the office with topical anesthetic and no down time. Our laser is also one of the few that is FDA approved for ethnic skin.
How it works
If you’re ready to rid your body of excess hair, then it is time to consider laser hair removal. Laser hair removal has become an increasingly popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. It works by using a highly-concentrated light on the areas where you have unwanted hair follicles. The laser selectively targets and destroys the hair follicle by absorbing the pigment in the hair, leaving the surrounding skin in the area undamaged.
As for the actual skin prep, limit any plucking, waxing, and electrolysis six weeks prior to the treatment. It is okay to continue shaving. The reason for this is the laser targets your roots, so if you’re using a hair removal method that rids the skin of hair follicles, the procedure will be less effective.
Results and maintenance
Most importantly, make sure you’re consistent so that you see results. Most patients can see permanent results after an average of three to seven sessions. Yearly maintenance may be necessary to make sure the results remain intact, as hair can technically grow back slightly, but will not reappear as before.
