What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, otherwise known as an abdominoplasty, is when excess skin and stretch marks are removed from the lower abdomen and the muscles are tightened. The procedure makes the abdomen flatter and removes skin that has been stretched by having babies or losing weight.
After having several children, many women lose the ability to flatten the lower and mid abdomen. This happens because the connective tissue is stretched and no matter how much working out you do; the connective tissue remains unaffected.
Others gain and lose substantial weight leaving excess skin and sometimes stretch marks. In this case, the skin has lost its ability to contract over the smaller abdomen. To regain a youthful tummy, it must be removed.
Still others have had hysterectomies, c-sections, or other pelvic surgery and have an unsightly scar that bulges. This procedure is a great option for all the above problems.
Types of Tummy Tucks
There are two general types of this procedure: the full tummy tuck and the mini tummy tuck.
For a full tummy tuck, the incision starts about three inches above the start of the vaginal opening and goes approximately from hip to hip. The skin from the top of this incision to just above the umbilicus is removed and the skin from the upper abdomen is pulled down and sewn. A new opening for the umbilicus is created and the muscles are tightened. Be sure to check our gallery page to see before and after pictures.
The mini tummy tuck is for those that need minimal skin tightened, are wanting to get rid of stretch marks low on the abdomen or need a scar revision and tightening from previous surgery.
Are you a candidate?
In this clip, Dr. Swetnam shares how to determine if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck.
Panniculectomy
A panniculectomy is a procedure used to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. This surgery removes skin that hangs down from the abdomen, commonly present after significant weight loss, such as after weight loss surgery. This procedure does not tighten the underlying abdominal muscles, like a tummy tuck does.
The panniculectomy can address the “apron” of skin that hangs down, often causing clothes to be ill-fitting and limiting some activities. This hanging skin can also make it difficult to properly clean and care for oneself, an important reason to get it addressed in a timely manner. Under some circumstances, some insurance providers may cover the cost of this procedure.

Combined Procedures
If you have ever said, “I would get a tummy tuck if they could do my hysterectomy, gallbladder, or hernia at the same time,” this is your lucky day. In conjunction with gynecologists, we perform many combined procedures. Hernias and gall bladders are also done in conjunction, saving anesthesia and recovery time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a tummy tuck cost?
This will depend on various factors, including the type of tummy tuck that interests you, your BMI and how much skin needs to be removed. To get an accurate estimate for your costs, schedule a consultation with Dr. Swetnam.
Do I have to get muscle repair with my tummy tuck?
It is not a requirement but in most cases it is necessary to get the flat tummy look. If your muscles are taut, you may only need liposuction and skin removal. No matter your situation, we work with you to deliver exactly what you need.
How do I find the best cosmetic surgeon for my tummy tuck?
Start by searching for cosmetic surgeons near you and reading their reviews. Pick maybe 4 to 5 that have solid reviews and then explore their websites. Look at their before and after photos to get a feel for their work, then set up consultations with the top 2 to 3. Once you meet them, choose the surgeon who feels like the right partner for your surgery.
What are the scars like after a tummy tuck?
This depends on how yours needs to be performed. No matter what, there will be scarring. In most cases, it is low enough on the abdomen that the majority of swimsuits and underwear can hide it.
I have a lot of loose skin on my stomach. Is a panniculectomy better for me?
It might be. If you are uncertain about which procedure is better for you, bring this up during your consultation. Our cosmetic surgeons will be able to offer you expert guidance.
